Why didn't the Native American people develop like the old world did?
Why did the people in America's technological growth basically not even compare to those of the old world? Or, even more, how come, compared to the old world (technological era was relatively consistent), you had the Central Americans who had ancient Greek era tech but the people in the United States were still basically living in the stone age?
first, what do you mean exactly by "technology"? think about europe in the 1500s. it was not exactly a pleasant place to live for many people, in particular peasants. there were many diseases and wars and periodic famines, corruption at the highest levels and the very wealthy and the very poor. then there was the prisons and various methods of execution including draw and quartering and public hanging etc.
during that same time period, north america had relatively few diseases (which is why the immune systems of the indigenous population was unprepared for the invasion of the europeans), there were no famines as the food supply was consistent due to farming techniques advanced from south america and moving northwards via trade routes, while wars were not unknown, they never reached the full scale invasions that europe saw over and over, there were no prisons as justice was swift with banishment being one of the severest forms of punishment. the people lived in a communal way for survival so being banished was as good as a death sentence.
indigenous north american people had farming techniques ideally suited to the areas they lived in, they had very complex systems of governing, enough to inspire those who later came to form america into copying one such indigenous government (iroquois), those who were semi nomadic (plains nations) developed the perfect housing that was easily portable (tipi) those like my nation, who had permanent villages even then still moved them every 10 years or so within our territory because of an understanding that the land we farmed needed to lay fallow for periods of time.
there is so much more. i think the reason so many think we were "stone age" is because they don't have a clue about the many diffeent cultures that existed here. its an ignorance and for some even an arrogance that leads them to believe all things european must have been superior.
